Why Modern Car Keys Cost More to Replace
The price and process for replacing a vehicle key depend less on its appearance than on the security functions inside it. A metal blade, transponder chip, remote and proximity fob require different parts and equipment.
Mechanical keys
Older keys may only need the correct blank and blade cut. Even then, the source key, key code and condition of the locks affect how the replacement is produced.
Transponder and remote-head keys
A transponder must be recognized by the immobilizer before the engine starts. Remote buttons may require a separate pairing procedure. A blade that opens the door is not proof that the electronic functions are complete.
Smart and push-to-start fobs
Compatibility can depend on part number, frequency, model year and vehicle configuration. Some used fobs cannot be reused, and some vehicles require dealer credentials or support.
What changes the estimate
Important factors include whether a working key remains, the key type, parts availability, programming access and the vehicle location. Providing accurate vehicle information before scheduling reduces the chance of ordering an incompatible key.
