Start with the door and existing device

A panic bar must work with the door, frame, latch arrangement and required exit function. Before repair or replacement, identify whether the device is rim, vertical rod or another configuration and whether the opening carries a fire-rating label.

Common operating problems

• The bar does not retract the latch fully.
• The door will not latch after closing.
• Trim or an exterior cylinder no longer operates correctly.
• Fasteners, rods or covers are loose or damaged.

Code and listing considerations

Life-safety hardware should not be blocked, improvised or modified to keep a door open. Hardware selection must be checked against the opening, occupancy and applicable requirements. Permits, inspection or coordination with the fire marshal, property manager or another trade may be necessary.
