Ignition Cylinder Problems and Replacement Options

Car Ignition Repair and Replacement

Signs of an ignition lock problem

  • The key is difficult to insert or remove.
  • The blade turns only after repeated movement or pressure.
  • The key is stuck or has broken in the cylinder.
  • A worn key works poorly in the ignition but still operates a door lock.

Do not force a key that has stopped turning. Extra force can break the blade or damage the cylinder further.

Repair, rekey or replacement

A worn key, debris, a damaged wafer or a failing cylinder can produce similar symptoms. The ignition should be inspected before replacement is recommended. Depending on its condition, the solution may be a new key, removal of a broken fragment, cylinder repair, rekeying or replacement of the lock cylinder.

When the ignition may not be the cause

A no-start condition can also come from the battery, starter, charging system, engine controls or another electrical fault. If the key turns normally but the engine does not crank or run, a mechanic or roadside service may be the right first call. A security or immobilizer warning may instead point to key programming.

Information needed before service

Provide the make, model, year, current symptoms and whether another key works. Proof of authorized access is required. Call 346-777-8777 to confirm whether the vehicle and ignition system can be serviced at your location.
