Standard, Restricted and High-Security Key Checks

A clear, unworn original usually produces a better duplicate than a key that is bent or heavily worn. The blank, keyway and restrictions are checked before cutting. The finished copy should be tested in the intended lock when practical.
Many common house keys can be duplicated when the correct blank is available. A copy cannot correct a lock that binds because of door alignment or internal damage, and a badly worn source key may need to be decoded or replaced another way.
Some keys are protected by a restricted distribution system or require an authorization card, identification, property-manager approval or an authorized dealer. A “Do Not Duplicate” marking and a patented restricted keyway are not the same thing, so the specific key must be checked.
