What Happens When No Working Key Remains

If every key is missing, call with the make, model, year, vehicle location and the type of key you used before the loss. Registration, identification or other proof of ownership is required before access or key work can begin.
The required steps depend on the vehicle. A traditional key may need a blade cut to the correct code. A transponder key must also be registered with the immobilizer, while a push-to-start vehicle needs a compatible smart fob and electronic programming. Some vehicles require dealer support or security credentials that limit mobile service.
For a complete overview, see car key replacement and key fob service.
Tell the technician if theft is possible rather than a simple loss. On some vehicles, missing electronic keys can be removed from the authorized key list during programming. This does not physically prevent an old mechanical blade from opening a compatible door lock, so the available security options must be checked for that vehicle.
If the key is visible in the cabin or trunk, replacement may not be necessary. Review the car lockout service instead and describe exactly where the key is located.
